BAGHDAD: Kuwait’s embassy in Baghdad came under rocket attack yesterday, prompting the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry to recall its diplomats and employees from Iraq. No injuries were reported. A source in Baghdad said three Katyusha rockets fell near the Kuwaiti embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone.
The source said one of the rockets hit the house of Iraq’s deputy PM, while another landed near the embassy’s entrance, shattering windows and shaking doors loose.
Kuwait’s Ambassador to Iraq Ali Al-Momen said the embassy staff in Iraq was safe and are returning to Kuwait to spend Ramadan there. He said he huddled in a shelter during the barrage, and later went directly to the airport to head to Kuwait.
The attack and the return of Ambassador Al-Momen and embassy staff comes on the heels of an Iraqi parliamentary campaign demanding his ouster from Iraq following a row over Kuwait’s Mubarak Al-Kabeer port.
